Unexpected Outro

June 5, 2026 10 Comments

By Charles Gray

Someone else called 911. Mrs. Lansberry couldn’t. She gripped her shopping cart tighter and trembled as her eighty-year-old husband collapsed. Strangers tried to help, but he didn’t respond.

Over the sound system, ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ played. A song she knew well, the one she and her husband first danced to at their prom. He called it “our song” and always teased her, saying it suited her stoic personality.

With clenched teeth, she stifled her cries of anguish.

After Emergency Medical Services failed to resuscitate him, a paramedic approached her. “Ma’am, are you his wife?”

A tear ran down her cheek.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Gripping lead sentence. The section regarding the grocery store song was unexpected and surprising. Good read!
