Unsettled

August 18, 2018 5 Comments

Unsettled

By Fred Vogel

I said I was OK when you asked, but I should have used the word unsettled.

Unsettled because I don’t know what my next move will be. The family wants to move to Nashville, but I can’t see it as the right place for me.

Unsettled that alcohol has finally defeated the wife. She doesn’t remember a thing.

Unsettled that every day for the past twenty years I’ve thought of you in one way or another.

Unsettled to think I lost my strength when I lost you.

And unsettled to realize I’m about to throw everything away to be with you.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

We can’t always pour out refreshing nectar when life tosses us lemons, and to die in self sacrifice over a former lover is passe without praise. Good job, Fred.

“Unsettled” is a really good word. It calls to mind a feeling I am familiar with. This story seemed sad and hopeless. Not one of my faves.
