Urban Wildlife

Urban Wildlife

By Werthworld

We missed the fragrant effusion of cherry blossoms around the basin by a few days, but basked in a glorious April morning stroll through Georgetown to the Kennedy Center. Birds chirped merry messages while fluttering between tree branches. Butterflies mingled amidst colorful spring blooms.

Nearing the Saudi Embassy, we saw ahead four Disney-esque squirrels chasing one another on the freshly manicured lawn, darting across the sidewalk, around a tree base and into the street.

Drawing nearer, urban wildlife’s idealized image blurred as our eyesight sharpened. We weren’t watching the playful frolic of cute squirrels. They were rats.

Welcome to Washington, DC!

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

You forgot to clarify if the rats were the four-legged or two-legged variety, DC is quite well known for both. I enjoyed your version, thanks.

Mentioning DC automatically leads readers to assume there’s a political message. The only message intended was that things are not always as they seem to be.
