Walter’s Home

April 24, 2023 4 Comments

By James Watt

Walter sits on a tattered armchair clutching another unsolicited offer to purchase his house. Much has changed—saplings supplanted by towering oaks, and apartments where old friends once thrived.

Time has left its mark in other ways. Riddled with arthritis, Walter finds many routine tasks a challenge. As he shuffles between dark and empty rooms, the creaky floorboards, blistered paint, and faded wallpaper share his long and tragic journey towards infirmity.

Nonetheless, Walter is determined to stay here for as long as possible. This old bungalow is the guardian of treasured memories. It is home, and for now, so is he.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Also meant to add that the title is very clever and ties nicely with the end. This 101 did it for this one. 🙂
