It was not the first time that thirteen-year-old Rajjo had been sent by her mother, the Mehras’ domestic help. Abandoned at birth, but now a loving child, Rajjo was found near a temple.
The then childless Mehras had suppressed their urge to bring Rajjo home. However, some months later, Avni came into their lives, having survived a botched delivery. Her unwed, teenager mother, unable to abort, had desperately wanted to get rid of her.
Now, Mrs. Mehra adjusted the scoliosis brace, before seating Avni on her CP Chair. Stealing fond glances at Rajjo, she asked herself the nth time, “What if…?”
Sharp. And numbing. Very well written.
A bit like a Chinese puzzle box, hard to solve, but when opened – truth. It did take me a while to understand that Rajjo could not be Avni’s mother.
One of the hardest questions of all.
