What the Dog Knew

August 15, 2021 17 Comments

By Alan Moskowitz

Daisy had been barking non-stop for two days, pausing only for food and walks. Ralph from next door, suffering red-rimmed sleep-deprived eyes, had confronted Lena, demanding that she shut the dog up or he would “shoot the damn bitch.” Lena swallowed her anger, smiled sweetly, and said she’d take care of it.

At three a.m., Lena wrangled her husband Frank’s body from the cellar, hefted it into her van, and sped off. Daisy stopped barking.

There was no thank you from Ralph, just a smug smile. Lena smiled back, knowing that Daisy would be barking again soon, but Ralph wouldn’t care.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Great work – so much story packed in but not over crowded.

The language you used fits the story perfectly; simple but impactful.

The second paragraph takes the reader by surprise; What? That sweet, smiling Lena is the villain, not Ralph? Good one!

Would it be more logical if Lena dismembered the body and fed it to her dog?
