My sister sits at a plastic folding table, sobbing. Smudged mascara encircles her eyes, giving her the appearance of a grieving raccoon. Black-tinged tears fall plop-plop on the paper tablecloth.
“I can’t believe she’s gone,” she cries.
Only last week, my sister had called to complain about our mother’s narcissism. “She’s a psychopath. She’s only lending me the money to control me.”
There is no mention of narcissism now. My sister extolls my mother’s generosity, as she should. All of my mother’s money has gone to her. I get, instead, a letter explaining why my sister needs it more than me.
Loved the vivid imagery in the paragraph. Very descriptive family dynamic piece about a situation that happens all too often. Nicely done!
Great story. I love the ‘food for thought’ element in that last line.
