Laura turned down the dark trail, knowing it wasn’t the safest route. However, it would save her time on her walk home.
For several minutes, only the chirping crickets echoed around her, but then came the crackling from the surrounding woods. She spun in all directions. There was no movement apart from the dancing fireflies.
She pressed forward. Her pace picked up when she felt eyes on her.
She grabbed the cross between her breasts. “Please God,” she whispered, confident she would be heard, “Keep me safe.”
Her prayer was heard. Sadly, it was by the man lurking in the shadows.
I loved this. Quite the ironic ending.
