Why?

Why?

By Emily Wood

The sky is dancing. Clouds pirouette in the wind as the sun stretches with a tired yawn.

“Mummy, why does it rain?”

Cardboard men in stiff, grey suits march down the high street; a bundle of blankets and newspapers feeds his dog.

“Daddy, why doesn’t that man sleep in his house?”

Angry voices haunt our house. They seep from beneath doors and through open windows. At night, someone turns the volume down.

“Daddy, why are you sleeping in here?”

A spaceship with big zips and four wheels sits in our hallway. The alien stole Mummy’s clothes.

“Mummy, why are you leaving?”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I loved the story arc… how it started out so light and airy.. a world so beautiful then descended into the sad and sadder.

Very, very compact story, telling a far longer one in just 101 words. Liked it!

    Nicely disjointed but connected.
