Willy

By Gary Davison

Lying on his back, he watched a small dot move across the ceiling and disappear into a crack. The bugs were getting bolder, he thought, as he stood up and slapped at something crawling on his neck.

The room was five paces wide with damp, chalky concrete walls. In the center of the room was a desk with a manual typewriter, where he sat down and started typing his daily plea for help: Oooee oooh! eeeio eeekie, aeeeie ooohe ooki eeekee!

Watching through the one-way glass, the little ones giggled as Dad read the bronze placard: ‘Willy, the amazing, typing chimpanzee.’

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

But just think–in a million, million years Willy might type “What light through yonder window breaks?”
