Win or Else

Win or Else

By Simon Hole

The coach stared at the sports section. A moral victory; that’s what they were calling last night’s two point loss to the nation’s number one team. The coach crumbled the paper into a ball and snorted in disgust. He knew moral victories weren’t reflected in the standings. He knew moral victories wouldn’t take this team to the next level. But, by God, he knew these young men and he knew what it would take. He placed his whip on the passenger seat, patted it lovingly, and drove to the practice gym, a hint of a smile slowly spreading across his face.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Hmm, not sure I’d want him for a coach, but enjoyed the story.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I modeled him on my football coach from 45 years ago. He never used a whip, but I bet he thought about it.

Well I sure didn’t see the whip coming! It gives the story fascinating depth–it could be read as a summary of 700 years of Spartan history. What starts out so rigorous and pure descends finally into decadent s&m. The two modes do seem to be History’s inseparable bunk-buddies.

What’s the old saying? Something like: “Drastic situations call for drastic measures!” However, I’d hate to be this coach when the lawsuits start hurtling his way! Good surprise ending.
