Sandra tried on the black dress she’d just finished making for the fancy dress party. “Better not put the hat on. It frightens the cats. They won’t come near me or anyone else wearing it.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really. Watch.” She put on the pointy witch’s hat. Both Ebony and Jet dashed under the table, cowering there and yowling. “See what I mean.” She removed the hat. The yowling stopped.
“Poor things,” I said. “Here, let me try it on.” I put on the hat and called in a low voice, “Cats, come here.” They came, brushed around my feet, and purred.
