Withholding True Love’s Kiss

May 17, 2025 4 Comments

By Kay Northbridge

Enchanted lips sparkle, scarlet like the poisoned apple, over snow-white teeth. After wiping cinders from her fingers with her own red cape, I remove her glittering glass slippers.

Mile-long golden hair, silky under this beast’s caress, leads me like a trail of crumbs to her forbidden garden. My fairest princess, sweet as gingerbread, begins her magical hundred-year slumber.

My desires whirl like wheels spinning gold, growing a beanstalk in my loins. I am hot as an oven, huffing and puffing, a wolf at her tower door. If I never put my hungry mouth to hers, I will live happily ever after.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

This is an excellent mash-up/retelling of fairytales!

Enchantment with edge. So lyrically fine, it resonates long after first reading. A pleasure to read aloud. (Do try this at home.)
