Without Guidelines

Without Guidelines

By James D Woessner

In a café where it was unlikely we’d be seen by anyone we knew, we held our coffee cups in both hands, mostly for the emotional warmth. It had only been six months, but she looked more beautiful than I remembered. Natural gray had won the follicle war without chemical retaliation, and she’d lost weight on the I’m-Available-Again Diet. There were, of course, the awkward questions with long pauses and short answers. And short bursts of laughter as we remembered snapshots of our short marriage, our imperfect past. Neither of us had a copy of Guidelines for Relating to the Ex.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I am not sure there are any reliable “Guidelines for Relating to the Ex.” but I enjoyed reading this.

The “Guidelines for Relating to the Ex.” is a very short one page best seller, which begins and ends with – RUN FAST, RUN HARD ‘TILL YOU REACH THE END OF THE RAINBOW!

Lovely piece of writing. Congrats. Ah, yes, the Ex’s Cafe. Used to do a decent latte and bacon roll, if I remember.

Very nice all around. My fave snippet was: “Natural gray had won the follicle war without chemical retaliation,”

Very nice. I even googled Guidelines for dealing with the Ex just for fun, and I cannot believe all the material that turned up!

“It had only been six months.” Pretty brave, I think. Or foolhardy.
