“Hi, Lucy. I haven’t heard from you much lately. I don’t even know if you remember me. I know that I only knew you for that one week, but you changed my life. I had friends before you, but you were the first person to actually show an interest in me. To care about my life. The first person who wanted to hear what I said and listened. You inspired me. I just wanted you to know how much you mean to me. Thank you so much.”
“No,” I whisper as the voicemail ends, “I’m sorry I didn’t answer. So sorry.”
Very emotional. It’s Mothering Sunday. I wonder if Lucy was author’s Mum?
I like this story although it is rather sad it is true to life. I can see that people who seem important to us may not find us important to them. Or they may have a different reason for not returning a call. So there are a lot of possibilities and a thought-provoking story.
Yes, sad, and I was thinking, happened more often when people rang and we didn’t have caller I.D. However, it captures a moment and the fact that she didn’t answer when the caller was in a mood to express their feelings. Could happen today easily. A missed moment that will not happen again. Bittersweet. And warm at the same time.
